The Proper Way to Detoxify the Body

Posted on May 26th, 2009 by Dr. Mercola  |  No Comments »

Detoxification is one of the important processes your body undergoes everyday in order to eliminate and neutralize toxins from your system. But sometimes, the accumulation of toxins from the air, water and food can be too overwhelming for your body’s natural detoxification mechanism, which is composed of your kidneys, liver, lungs, lymph and skin.

If your liver is unable to deal with the excessive amounts of toxic chemicals that get into your body, these toxins build up over time, causing disruption and damage. They will continue to circulate until they are stored in the fat cells of your organs and tissues, and can persist for years or even decades.

Depending on what type of toxin is lingering in your body, you can experience all sorts of chronic and degenerative conditions that can be traced to an overwhelming burden of chemical overload.

For example, a single molecule of mercury can stop up to 1000 zinc molecules from functioning.

So how do you get these toxins out of your system?

Detoxifying your body periodically will definitely help counteract the effects of the accumulation of toxins and will help enhance your body’s natural cleansing actions.

But what detox program should you use?

Detoxifying diets have become a popular method of inner cleansing. Because Americans tend to have diets that cause constipation, changing your diet can help give you the same results provided by many herbal detoxification products, which are just laxatives by nature.

Ideally, people are supposed to have one or two bowel movements daily but a lot of people can go two or three days between bowel movements.

The normal exit point for toxins is through the liver, which turns harmful substances into water-soluble molecules that can be eliminated as urine or feces. However, these toxins stay in your body longer if there is a delay in your bowel movement.

Fasting is one of the oldest methods of detoxification because it gives the stomach and intestines time to take a break and allows the body to burn its excess fat reserves. However, some health experts believe that fasting is not a good cleansing method because the body needs nutrients for it to optimally perform its functions, including detoxification.

A number of companies have jumped on the detox bandwagon and are offering detox cleansing products. But be careful when using such products because many of them are poorly researched and may potentially make things worse.

Take for instance the Kinoki foot pads, which promise to restore your good health by helping you flush out everything from heavy metals to metabolic wastes, toxins, parasites, cellulite and other harmful substances.

A reporter bought some Kinoki foot pads, wore them to bed, and found the pads covered in a brown mess in the morning, making it seem like they did detoxify something. But when the reporter took the foot pads to a laboratory and had them analyzed and compared with the unused pads, the used pads were almost identical to the unused ones.

Another experiment showed that the “gunk” will appear if you hold the pads over a pot of boiling water. Apparently, steam contains “metabolic waste.”

Natural health expert Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt tested the effectiveness of detox foot pads, including the traditional Japanese footpad that has been in use for over 100 years. He saw improvements in the autonomic nervous system depending on where a patient placed the Japanese foot pads, but the benefits were more related to carbon-based toxins and not to heavy metals.

With regards to the commercial foot pads, most of them did not trigger detoxification.

But not all detox products are scams. People with slow metabolism can use an infra-red sauna, which heats up tissues several inches deep to enhance natural metabolic processes, improve circulation and helps oxygenate the tissues.

The skin is another major organ of elimination but many people do not sweat on a regular basis due to sun damage to the skin, wearing synthetic or tight clothing, or leading a sedentary lifestyle. Repeated use of the sauna will help slowly restore skin elimination, which can lead to a significant reduction of your toxic load. Other less effective options are steam baths, sweat lodges, vigorous exercise and hot tubs.

Regardless of what detox program you intend to try, the FIRST and MOST IMPORTANT thing to do is to establish a healthy lifestyle and dietary habits.

If you fail to do this, you’re bound to place a very heavy burden on your liver and overwhelm its ability to process toxic substances and eliminate them from your system. Prematurely starting detox processes when you’re not ready may potentially make you very sick, so always exercise caution and evaluate your current state of health before starting any detoxification program.
