The economic recession has affected a lot of people in the U.S. in a lot of ways. You’ve probably felt it too. What you’re about to read is how the recession can indirectly affect the health of many schoolchildren around the country.
Because the budgets of schools have decreased, cash-strapped school administrators are looking for alternative sources that will allow them to continue providing the basic needs of their schools, like textbooks and copy machines.
Mobile service providers have come to their rescue, bringing an unlikely and controversial source of funds – cell phone towers.
School grounds, particularly those in residential areas, are ideal locations for cell phone towers. On average, a school can earn between $11,000 to $66,000 dollars annually from lease on a cell phone tower. It’s an easy money-making opportunity for school administrators because the rent increases 3 to 4 percent per year.
It’s good that cell towers will provide more funds for the education of children but is it a fair trade if your child’s health is put at risk?
The debate over school-based cell phone towers is not something new. Last year, an Oregon district banned the lease towers on school grounds. The Los Angeles Unified School District also took similar measures in 2000.
There are almost 262 million mobile phone users in America and a lot of people have already been warned of the potential dangers of cell phone use. Even children use cell phones for hours each day. If cell phone towers continue to rise on school grounds, the children’s increased proximity to radiation from these towers can only increase the health risks.
But schools are not alone. Churches, hospitals, firehouses, cemeteries and even parks are also convenient locations for “camouflaged” cell towers.
If you and your children use a cell phone and other wireless services, let me tell you now that cell phone dangers are for real.
Whenever you make a call using your mobile phone or turn on the television, your body is bombarded with electromagnetic waves. The presence of electromagnetic waves has increased dramatically and alarmingly over the last few years due to wireless services like cell phones, WiFi, WiMax and BlueTooth.
For most people, the damage from daily exposure to electromagnetic radiation will take years or even decades to manifest because there is a lag time of five to 20 years for the health effects to become clinically apparent.
Does this mean you have nothing to worry about?
Ask the residents of Berkeley House, a five-story apartment building in Bristol, the United Kingdom’s ninth most populous city. Two cell phone masts owned by mobile phone company Orange and Vodafone were erected on top of the building in 1994. Seven residents got sick with cancer; three have already died and the other four are still battling the disease.
The cancer rate among the occupants living on the top floor of the building, where residents from five of the eight flats were affected, is 20 percent – 10 times the UK average. Additionally, of the 110 Berkeley House residents, 74 have complained of headaches and other health problems.
Numerous studies have linked exposure to electromagnetic waves from cell phone radiation and other radio frequencies to health problems. Almost all of the potential biological damage you can sustain come from the modulated signals that are on the carrier microwave, which resonate in biological frequencies of a few to a few hundred cycles per second, stimulating your vibrational cellular receptors to cause a wide array of pathological responses that can cause cancer and:
• brain tumors
• Alzheimer’s disease
• senility
• dementia
• Parkinson’s disease
• autism
• headaches
• sleep disruptions and fatigue
• altered memory function, poor concentration and spatial awareness
Dr. Mercola believes that excessive cell phone use and exposure to electromagnetic waves are far more dangerous than smoking cigarettes. Because there is no safe biological threshold for exposure to information-carrying radio waves, it’s impossible to avoid exposure 100 percent, except maybe if you live in an island or a mountain far away from civilization. There are now already more than 175,000 cell towers in the U.S. and this number is expected to increase to 260,000 by 2010.
However, you can greatly reduce your family’s exposure by following these simple tips:
• Don’t spend too much time on a cell phone or cordless phone.
• Avoid wireless BlueTooth headsets. Use a wired headset to limit your cell phone exposure. Try an air tube headset that conducts sound but prevents any radiation from traveling up the wire to your brain. Make sure that wire is shielded to prevent it from acting as an antenna that could attract more radio waves directly to your brain.
• Find out where the WiFi routers are located in your workplace and stay away from them.
• Do not use anything other than the 900 MHz land-based portable phones because the Gigahertz phones are continuously on and will bombard you with radio waves 24/7.
• Use the speakerphone instead of putting the phone to your ear
• Limit the calls you make inside buildings.
• Use your cell phone in open spaces whenever possible
• Limit your children’s cell phone use or don’t give them any cell phones at all because their developing nervous systems and thinner skulls are simply very vulnerable to electromagnetic radiation.
• To know how close your house is to a cell phone tower or antenna, simply type your location into AntennaSearch.com. It will show you all the towers and antennas (existing and future) within eight miles of your address
Dr. Mercola’s new book, Wireless Deception, is set to be released sometime this year and will provide more information about this alarming phenomenon. You can also find out more about cell phone dangers and the effects of wireless technology on your health by visiting Mercola.com.
